Two couples, Jeff (Jonathan Tucker) and Amy (Jena Malone) and Eric (Shawn Ashmore) and Stacy (Laura Ramsey) are on holiday in Mexico. They meet a German tourist called Mathias (Joe Anderson) and decide to travel with him to the ruins of a Mayan temple where his brother Heinrich went with his archaeologist girlfriend. Mathias’ friend Dimitri (Dimitri Baveas) joins them.
They reach the Mayan temple but meet some Mayan villagers who are very hostile so they climb the temple to escape. At the top they find an abandoned camp and Heinrich dead. More Mayans appear below and the group hear a cellphone coming from a shaft leading deep into the temple.
I think I’ve said enough about the plot, I don’t want to give anything away. It’s a good-looking film, quite a cheap Blu-ray too, shot in Australia actually, and the unrated version at least, which I’ve just watched, has some nice gore, some nice effects. The cast was fine, about average for a 00s horror film, no one stood out as particularly good or bad, just the usual group in peril.
The plot, which I’m not going into in any great depth, maybe check out some other reviews if you want to know more, was OK, I haven’t read the book, yet, but it kept me watching and I wanted to see how things turned out.
I enjoyed it but I wouldn’t go shouting from the rooftops about it. But it was well-made and definitely worth a watch, at least in my opinion. Would I recommend it? No. Just an OK little horror really. Nothing special.
